What is the difference between è and é

I'm struggling to hear the difference. I've used Forvo and Google Translate but I still can't hear it. Could someone help me? I believe that, in general, an accented vowel of any kind is either shortened or lengthened depending on its angle. Eh e is like the A in "way", and uses a "normal" length of time to say it.
