Why referendum in sudan

The revered South Sudanese leader died in a plane crash just days after signing the January peace agreement ending more than 20 years of conflict between the black Christian-dominated south and the mainly Arab Muslim north. According to the commission website, 3,, votes were cast during the week-long ballot. Five of the 10 states in Sudan's oil-producing south showed a North and south Sudan have suffered decades of conflict driven by religious and ethnic divides.

Southern Sudan is one of the least developed areas in the world and many of its people have have long complained of mistreatment at the hands of the Khartoum government. On 9 July South Sudan became the newest country in the world. The birth of the Republic of South Sudan is the culmination of a six-year peace process and a new chapter in a region that has seen little peace in the last 50 years. The resolution mandates UNMISS to consolidate peace and security, and to help establish the conditions for development with a view to strengthening the capacity of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to govern effectively and democratically and establish good relations with its neighbours.

On 17 May , the Secretary-General urged the parties and the Security Council to consider a three-month extension of UNMIS due to ongoing security concerns in South Sudan that were directly related to security issues that the North and South had to address together. Transparency in the oil industry is intensely important.

Unarguably, for the time being, a new South Sudan must cooperate with the north to ensure that oil continues to be exported and produced, but reporting a 26 percent production calculation discrepancy will not be sustainable for two such intertwined economies. The north and south must work together if they want to grow as independent nations. As ballots continue to be cast, let both sides remember what they can gain from cooperation.
